This is one of my favorite times of the year: the end of the year behind us, and the start of the one ahead of us. Not because I'm particularly excited about the champagne and fireworks that are usually part of this celebration, but because it allows me to go full 'reflective mode'. On the 1st of January, I have my own rituals and traditions. One of them is to sit down and write a journal entry imagining it's the final day of the year, December 31st, and I'm looking back at how the year has been. So I'm writing in the past tense. Here are some of the questions I ask myself:
Who have I enjoyed spending time with?
Which places have I travelled to?
How much money have I made?
What new projects have I created?
Which existing projects have I continued?
How has my love life made me feel?
What lessons have I learnt?
How have I taken care of my body?
What personal growth have I experienced?
What has made me feel most alive this year?
Writing about your year ahead as if it's already happened, can bring you a kind of clarity that is hard to get if you are trying to look ahead into the future. Because we can never predict what will happen. But writing about how we would like life to turn out, by retrospectively looking back, is a different story. I highly recommend that you give this exercise a try.
I have a whole range of other traditions that I do early January to clean out my energy from the previous year, and to open up the doors to fresh energy of the new year. Every time I do this, the impact is so powerful. It leaves me feeling focused and centered, as well as excited about what is to come.
I'd love to share all my best New Year's practices with you. Which is why I'm organizing a new event! If you want to enter 2023 with clarity, direction, and excitement, this masterclass for you.
